The Kingsport Family YMCA and Kingsport Aquatic Center Celebrate their 10 year partnership

The Kingsport Family YMCA and Kingsport Aquatic Center is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the facility and partnership with an afternoon of outdoor games, trivia with prizes, and lots of fun at the outdoor water park!

The celebration takes place on May 25 and begins at 12:30 pm. City Officials and key individuals from both organizations will provide opening comments and a special proclamation before opening to YMCA and Kingsport Aquatic Center Members from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm and 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm to community members.

“We hope everyone is eager to get back to swimming, sunbathing and having fun this summer,” said Jessie Charlton, interim assistant aquatic manager. “It has been great to see our facility grow over the past 10 years to meet the needs of our community and our visitors.”

Lawn games (giant Jenga, Connect Four and corn hole) will be set up in the grassy area of the lazy river, trivia questions will be asked throughout the afternoon and a live DJ will be there from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

All outdoor and indoor pools should be open to attendees and in case of inclement weather, the celebration will take place on May 26.

“The summer is always our busiest season, and we see more kids and families coming to our facility,” said Tianna Storey, VP of Operations/COO. “I wasn’t here when this facility opened back in 2013 but I know that over the years, we have expanded our facility and services to meet the needs of our community and it’s exciting to celebrate our 10-year anniversary.”

The YMCA and Aquatic Center broke ground on the facility in December of 2011 with the support of the city, mayor and members of the community and completed construction and opened its doors in May of 2013.

A year after opening, the YMCA begin construction on a 19,000-square-foot expansion to the facility in 2014. The expansion added an additional basketball court, expanded the child watch area to include the Adventure Kids space, added an intergenerational lounge for socializing, a large group exercise studio and functional training area, walking track and additional areas for gathering and socializing. The construction was completed in 2015.

In the spring of 2020, the Kingsport Aquatic Center completed construction on its outdoor expansion which included an outdoor lap pool, a shaded pavilion, additional outdoor restrooms, an administrative area, and other amenities.

The Kingsport Family YMCA would like to thank its partners whose support and generosity made it possible to provide this facility and its services to the Kingsport and Tri-cities community.
