The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps people at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes reduce their risk by learning to make healthier choices that lead to big results. Research has shown that by eating healthier,increasing physical activity and losing a small amount of weight, a person with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by 58% and 71% in those over age 65.
Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. More than 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes.
The rate of prediabetes is 45% in our surrounding region. In 5 years, up to 30% of those with prediabetes will develop type 2 without immediate intervention.
Prediabetes may be reversible; diabetes has no cure.
Why should I participate? You will learn from a trained Lifestyle Coach how to make small changes that can help reduce your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
Who qualifies? People 18 years or older who are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Take the risk assessment HERE.
How does it work? Once a week for 16 weeks, you will gather in a small group setting for an hour to learn how to incorporate healthy eating, physical activity and behavior modification into your daily life. After those 16 weeks, you will transition to 3 bi-weekly meetings and then to monthly for the last 6 months of the program to check in with your Lifestyle Coach and fellow participants as you continue to encourage each other and make progress toward a healthier lifestyle.
