Providing safe and healthy activity opportunities for every age, the Y is growing its reach with a new addition, which will better serve thousands of people from age 6 weeks to 106 and give everyone way to live better. Your Kingsport YMCA is expanding to offer more programs, add amenities and most importantly, to build people and community. The end goal may provide larger spaces, but the heart of the project is to better serve YOU.

The Kingsport YMCA #smallstarts initiative, in alignment with Healthier Tennessee/Healthy Kingsport, plans to take on staff wellness at the front lines. Kingsport was recently chosen as one of nine pilot communities throughout the state to start implementing small changes in people’s lives to create a healthy lifestyle. Within the Kingsport Y, a task force has been created to brainstorm ideas comprised of different full-time/part-time staff and community volunteers on ways to get all staff involved with small starts towards a healthier lifestyle.

How I gained a new life. A member of the YMCA Wellmont Center recently told me she ran .5 a mile on the treadmill, and I literally gasped. I cannot imagine running for 10 seconds on a treadmill, let alone half a mile, but I know we’re all different. Give me a handful of good friends, and I can run for hours outside, but the thought of running alone on a treadmill sends images into my head of a frustrated hamster on a wheel. That being said, I can’t remember the last time I have done any exercise solo. Group Exercise has been the key in both my weight loss journey, as well as my career path with the Y.
